What is a deacon?
Deacon
A deacon, or deaconess, is a member appointed to practical service in a congregation: ushering, welfare, preparing for communion, and in many churches counting and banking the offering.
In Baptist churches the deacons are the governing body under the pastor. In Assemblies of God they form the church board with a chair, secretary and treasurer. In the Church of Pentecost they sit on the local presbytery with the elders.
