An elder is a mature member appointed or elected to share in the spiritual leadership of a congregation, whether as a Pentecostal assembly elder, an Adventist church elder or a Presbyterian presbyter.
The Adventist church elects a first elder who leads the congregation when the pastor, who usually serves a district of several churches, is elsewhere.
