Baptism is the sacrament of entry into the church, recorded in the baptismal register with the person's name, date of birth, parents, sponsors, date and minister.
The baptismal register is the one church record people come back for decades later, for a passport, a marriage or a scholarship. It is the reason a church's records have to survive a change of secretary.
